In a key step towards improving the quality of life for North Mumbai’s slum inhabitants, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry and North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal handed over allocation letters for new homes to over 1,000 families living in the slum region.
These 1,000 dwellings are in addition to the 1,200 already handed over through the government’s reconstruction project. This is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambition to ensure that no family in India is without a home with basic facilities such as sanitation, water supply, and power in a clean environment.
The event took place on October 6. Goyal also launched a project to transform North Mumbai into a slum redevelopment model, ensuring that slum inhabitants receive their new homes on the same sites where they used to live.
Speaking at the occasion in Dahisar, Goyal emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring that all North Mumbai people have their own homes shortly. He emphasised that this program is more than just housing; it is about creating a healthier, safer, and more dignified living environment for slum people.
This initiative is part of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority’s (SRA) larger efforts to improve the living circumstances of people in Mumbai’s informal settlements. Under this scheme, each beneficiary will receive a 300-square-foot home with contemporary infrastructure and sanitary facilities. Shri Goyal emphasised the necessity of providing slum inhabitants with not only dwellings but also sustainable living circumstances, which aligns with the government’s objective of improving urban living across India.
In addition to housing, Goyal highlighted other major infrastructural projects undertaken in North Mumbai over the last four months. The opening of the Akurli Bridge, the reconstruction of Bhagwati Hospital, and road improvements from Dahisar to Bhayandar are all major projects. Additionally, occupational certifications were issued free of charge to all qualifying applicants, ensuring that permits and permissions were executed smoothly.
Goyal concluded the event by inviting the local community to work together to convert North Mumbai into “Uttam Mumbai” (Excellent Mumbai), a goal that includes not just physical infrastructure but also the improvement of people’s lives through better housing and community assistance.
