The Mumbai police arrested three members of a family on Wednesday for allegedly duping an elderly man out of Rs 16 crore by offering to sell an entire floor of a building to be built in a Bandra redevelopment project.
According to the police, the accused—Mehmood Hassan Quadri, his son Fahid Mehmood Quadri, and his wife Bilkis Mehmood Quadri—allegedly conspired to promise flats to Farukh Parekh, 67, in the project between 2007 and 2023, accepting advance money from him but never completing the construction work.
Parekh, a South Mumbai resident, claimed in the First Information Report (FIR) that the con artists first stole Rs 4 crore in cash from him between 2008 and 2010 in exchange for the promise to turn over ownership of a 2000-square-foot flat on the sixth floor and the entire floor in a Peri Cross Road redevelopment project by 2013.
The three did not fulfil their commitment, stating that they were unable to obtain a Commencement Certificate (CC) from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
The ‘developers’ informed the complainant in November 2017 that they were working on a cluster redevelopment project that included Fatima Lodge, Al-Mahmood Apartment, Desire, and Casa Manor after he persisted in questioning them about the delivery of the flats.
The Bandra police filed a case against the three on Wednesday under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code after receiving sanction from the zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police.
