In an unexpected turn of events, Mumbai Metro Line 3 faced its first severe mechanical difficulty on Saturday evening. A train travelling from Sahar to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) came to a halt within the tunnel. The event stranded commuters between two stations in the underground Aarey-BKC line, including young children and older residents.
The failure occurred at 7:30 p.m. between the Sahar and T1 stations, alarming commuters who soon took to social media to express their distress. At 8:10 p.m., one post on X (previously Twitter) described the situation as follows: “Stuck on Metro Line 3 for nearly an hour between Marol and T1 station. “Babies were crying, staff were unresponsive, and senior citizens were among us.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) published a statement over 22 hours later, at 5:57 p.m. on Sunday, confirming the brief inconvenience. They added that the technical fault was swiftly found and fixed, allowing the train to arrive at T1 station in 20 minutes.
However, MMRCL’s statement was imprecise on the nature of the technical issue, causing frustration among passengers who were dissatisfied with the communication delay and lack of clarity. The corporation thanked passengers for their patience and restated its commitment to providing safe and efficient metro service.
This incident represents the first serious disruption to Mumbai Metro Line 3, an important underground link in the city’s expanding transit network. As the metro system expands, authorities are under growing pressure to give timely information and ensure that travellers receive seamless service.
