Redevelopment is a huge challenge in cities like Mira Bhayandar because of low margins and FSI. Dilapidated buildings that collapsed 12-15 years ago have yet to be renovated. Thane’s example of allotting dwellings to everyone from slums to illegal chawls taught me that decaying buildings may be rehabilitated through cluster development plans. However, Narendra Mehta and his civic corporation team refused to approve my reconstruction plan. However, locations like Bhayandar East, Navghar, and Gaothans will require renovation in the next few years, and my cluster development proposal would pave the way for better housing at no cost.
The city saw numerous protests over water supplies. People still consider it a ‘pyasa shahar’ (thirsty city). When I was mayor, we implemented the Surya scheme for 218 MLD. However, the concept necessitated a vast network of water lines, so when I became MLA, I proposed an R516 crore aid package for the project. The work was halted for two years owing to COVID-19, but it is almost finished, and people will have nearly twice the water supply by March or April 2025.
The creation of a new Development Plan (DP) is underway. In the DP, we will ensure enough places and reservations for colleges, schools, businesses, the corporate sector, and IT in the city. It will produce more jobs and reduce the need for individuals to travel long distances for work.
