The Mumbai Central Coaching Depot of Western Railway has successfully implemented a new two-way switch-controlled pit illumination system, marking a significant step forward in energy conservation efforts. The upgraded system comprises a total of 120 LED pit lights, each rated at 16W/48V. These lights are centrally controlled and organised into two circuits, enhancing energy efficiency.
This project is the first of its kind within Indian Railways, underscoring a commitment to sustainable practices in the railway sector.
A senior Western Railway official noted that, prior to this system upgrade, the pit lights would remain continuously lit regardless of the work center, resulting in substantial energy wastage.
The excessive use of these LED fittings over long durations also necessitated more frequent replacements. To address this issue, the new system incorporates a two-way switch and a junction box for circuit segregation, effectively reducing energy consumption and extending the lifespan of the light fittings.
