Dharavi Redevelopment: Survey Done for 25,000 Tenements, 60,000 Units Numbered

According to a statement released on November 28 by Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government, survey work for 25,000 tenements has been finished, and 60,000 dwellings have been numbered since the exercise started in March of this year.

The corporation started the survey in March 2024 and anticipates finishing it by March 2025. According to Dharavi redevelopment officials, if approvals are obtained, construction for the project’s rehabilitation component can then start.

Tenement surveying is a complicated process that calls for careful planning and cooperation. According to a statement from the business, crews first carry out a site survey before systematically numbering the tenements. Determining the eligibility of new dwellings and moving forward with future project phases depends on the survey.

According to a statement from DRPPL, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) established by the state government and the Adani Group, the survey process starts with tenement numbering and land reconnaissance. The survey uses cutting-edge Lidar mapping technology to record the region’s topography. Once the basic map has been verified, the most crucial stage, door-to-door verification, starts.

The largest slum in Asia, Dharavi, is being redeveloped through a joint effort between the government and the Adani Group. 296 acres of the nearly 600 acres that make up the ₹20,000-crore urban redevelopment project will be renovated in the centre of Mumbai. After the project is finished, qualifying residents will receive a 350-square-foot flat in the neighbourhood, while ineligible residents will be relocated to another part of Mumbai. It is projected that between 1.5 lakh and 2 lakh tenements will require survey work, according to sources.

The main setting for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire was the Dharavi slum cluster. Additionally, Dharavi is a major centre for small enterprises that produce everything from leather items to textiles and pottery.

The company claims that ground-level buildings constructed in the Dharavi Notified Area (DNA) on or before January 1, 2000, are eligible for free in-situ repair. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) would provide a residence outside the Dharavi Notified Area (DNA) to those built between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, for a modest fee of ₹2.5 lakh.

According to the corporation, residents will benefit from ten years of free operation and maintenance for buildings undergoing renovation as well as ten percent more commercial space that the community may be able to lease out and have free operations and maintenance for a lifetime.
