Mumbai CSMT Redevelopment: Progress and Pending in Rs 2450 Cr Project

According to a source, the redevelopment of the city’s famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has made 15% progress, with the excavation work for the new Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) building 95% finished. For the CSMT 2.0 project, Indian Railways has promised travellers an airport-like experience.

In south Mumbai, there will be enough for both business and residential buildings in the recently constructed and upgraded infrastructure. The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) is actively monitoring the project to ensure its prompt completion, according to a Times of India report that quoted an official as saying that the piling work for the Officers’ Residential Complex is complete.

Ahluwalia Contracts Limited is carrying out the full project. According to the TOI report, Central Railway authorised the plan on December 19, 2022, at a total cost of Rs 2,450 crore. Thus far, Rs 342 crore has been spent. 4,61,534 square meters make up the entire redevelopment area, which includes 1,30,912 square meters for refurbishment and 2,79,507 square meters for new building. In addition, the report explained that an additional 13,412 square meters would be used for other projects, and 37,703 square meters of open space would be created close to the terminus.

The four-story DRM office building is being built at CSMT close to Platform 18. After the new DRM building is constructed, the existing structure will be razed. The report states that 65% of the foundation work has been finished and that the excavation for the new structure is almost finished.

The project provides travellers with a wide range of amenities and services. The TOI article also stated that in addition to local trains, footbridges, and skywalks, there will be separate areas for passenger facilities, parcel services, and decks connecting mail/express.

It further said that open areas close to the major heritage building would be solely used by passengers to facilitate efficient crowd control. Multiple access points will also be included in the redesigned CSMT, enabling smooth communication between business areas, long-distance trains, the harbour line, and suburban railways.
