The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is carrying out the project, stated that the much-anticipated Airoli Katai Naka Road Project Phase 3 preparatory work is anticipated to start shortly. There are three stages to the project’s execution. Phase 3 involves building an elevated road from the National Highway (NH-4) to Katai Naka. The task was recently awarded, according to MMRDA. Surveys and geotechnical studies are among the preliminary tasks the contractor will begin shortly. The total cost of the awarded contract is Rs 1981.17 crore. This phase will take 48 months to complete.
Phases 1 and 2 are anticipated to be ready for traffic by October of the following year, with 90% and 75% of the construction done, respectively.
Phase 1 entails building a 3.43-kilometer elevated and twin tunnel route connecting the Thane Belapur route and NH-4. The elevated section is roughly 0.94 km long and has three lanes plus three. It involves building a 1.68-kilometer twin tunnel with four lanes. While the twin tunnel’s work is almost 90% finished, the elevated portion’s construction is finished. Phase 1’s updated contract cost is around Rs 556 crore.
In contrast, Phase 2 focusses on building the elevated section between Thane Belapur Road and Airoli Bridge. The elevated section is 3+3 lanes long. At Thane Belapur Road, close to Airoli station, it is intended to link with the Phase 1 elevated road. The elevated road will then connect to the tunnel at Parsik Hill. About 75% of the Phase 2 construction is finished. Phase-II’s updated contract cost is approximately Rs 395 crore.
The Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP) is responsible for the building of the Airoli Katai Naka Road project. From the Airoli end of the Mulund-Airoli Bridge, the project’s full route traverses Thane Belapur Road, continues on NH-4 (old) and joins the Katai Naka-Badlapur Road via crossing the Kalyan-Shil Road at Katai Naka. The project is 12.3 km long overall.
Commuters currently have two options when going by road from Mumbai to Kalyan, Badlapur, etc.: they can take the Thane, Mumbra, Kalyan Phata, and Shil-Kalyan Road route, or they can use the Mankhurd, Vashi, Mahape, Mahal-Kalyan Road route.
The project’s completion will cut the travel time between Mulund and Katai Naka by seven to eight kilometres, which will save 45 minutes to an hour during peak traffic hours. Additionally, this will relieve traffic on the NH-4 (old) Thane-Belapur Road, Mahape Road, Shilphata, and Kalyan Phata intersections.
