The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will begin concreting work at the Mumbai Central Bus Stand on Monday to upgrade infrastructure and solve long-standing operational issues. Within the next two months, the project—which is a component of a statewide effort to upgrade 183 bus depots—will be finished.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which has allotted Rs 600 crore for modernizing bus stops throughout the state, is working on the project. At an anticipated cost of Rs 1.64 crore, the bus terminal at Mumbai Central would be concreted over an area of about 1,900 square meters.
The approximately 155 buses that leave Mumbai Central every day from depots outside the city currently transport thousands of people. However, buses from the Mumbai Central depot will still run out of the current location.
To maintain uninterrupted operations throughout the concretisation process, certain routes will be temporarily redirected to alternative bus terminals. The goal of stepwise rerouting is to ensure seamless operations during the construction phase while minimising passenger interruption.
The project intends to address recurring concerns for passengers and bus operations, such as dust, waterlogging, and potholes. It is anticipated that these enhancements will make passengers’ commutes more efficient and seamless at the project’s conclusion.
All services will return to the Mumbai Central Bus Stand after the construction is finished. It is anticipated that this renovation will greatly improve the infrastructure of public transportation, which will eventually benefit both passengers and MSRTC’s operations.
