Report: Mumbai Metro Phase 2 Linking Dadar & Worli Set For March 2025 Launch

By March 2025, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) plans to begin extending the Metro 3 network, improving connectivity throughout the city. This new phase, which comprises six crucial stations—Dharavi, Shitladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk—will expand services to Acharya Atre Chowk station in Worli.

These stations are in strategic metropolitan locations home to busy business districts, corporate offices, places of worship, and educational institutions. The extension will significantly improve Mumbai’s transit system by enhancing public transport accessibility in these crowded areas.

According to S K Gupta, MMRC’s director of projects, who was quoted in the Free Press Journal article, the 9.7-kilometre segment is expected to open by March 2025. He affirmed that the Overhead Catenary System (OHE) and track laying have been finished and that architectural and signalling installations are almost finished. According to the Times of India, trains are now running in both directions at Acharya Atre Chowk as part of trial runs to gather information for software updates.

MMRC intends to apply to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for final approval to guarantee a timely launch. Since the rolling stock was approved during the Aarey-JVLR-BKC section’s Phase I trials, the procedure should go quickly. MMRC is also completing operational planning for the impending extension, including as service scheduling and train deployment.

Metro 3’s first phase began operating on October 5, 2024, and it presently serves about 22,000 passengers every day. As the additional extension reaches more densely populated areas, this figure is anticipated to rise dramatically. The next section, which will connect BKC and Colaba, is anticipated to open by May 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the Legislative Council.

Along the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ route, Metro 3 has a 33.5-kilometer underground track with 27 stations—26 underground and one at grade. This project is a significant step towards modernising Mumbai’s public transit system and reducing the city’s traffic congestion.
