Mumbai’s SCLR Extension To Transform East-West Connectivity By 2025

With the completion of two important projects—the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension and the widening of Hans Bhugra Road—Mumbai’s infrastructure is expected to undergo a significant upgrade.

The Defence Ministry has received Rs 16 crore from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to purchase property for the widening of Hans Bhugra Road, which will connect Kalina to the Western Express Highway near Santacruz. To reduce traffic near Vakola, the project intends to extend the road from 20 to 45 meters and increase the number of lanes from three to five. The widening is expected to be finished in five months, despite obstacles like drawn-out talks and architectural changes. To limit interruptions, the building will take place at night.

After being delayed by design changes, traffic control problems, and election-related disruptions, the SCLR expansion project—which was first finished in 2014—is now moving forward. The extension’s curved cable-stayed bridge over the Vakola flyover, which the Mumbai traffic police just approved, is one of its highlights. The project is now projected to be completed by June 2025, with a cost increase from Rs 450 crore in 2016 to Rs 650 crore.

With the SCLR extension facilitating traffic flow between Chembur, Kurla, and Vile Parle, both projects seek to improve Mumbai’s connectivity. When combined, these improvements should provide commuters with much-needed relief from traffic in major areas.
