Malad’s Traffic Set For A Breather With BMC’s New Road Plan

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revealed plans to build two new arterial roads in a major effort to ease traffic congestion close to Malad station. Connecting SV Road and Anand Road, these roads, each measuring 9.15 meters in width, would improve access to one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban train stations.

According to a recent study by IIT Bombay, during peak hours, the current road network in Malad handles an alarming 8,268 passengers per hour. The constrained roadways make daily travel difficult for locals and tourists, especially with issues like unlawful parking, encroachments, and unpermitted hawking.

The civic organisation has suggested two new ways to address this: one close to Somayya Chambers and the other next to Malad Shopping Centre. As part of these developments, existing structures will be cleared along the approved lines, and the BMC guarantees that demolitions will adhere to the proper legal procedures.

Piyush Goyal, the Union Commerce Minister, and Mumbai (North) MP, has also examined the project and urged its prompt completion. In an interview with the media on January 4, Goyal confirmed that work would start in three to four months and that the project would greatly reduce traffic and enhance Malad citizens’ living standards.

As important thoroughfares leading to the station, Anand Road, Kasturba Road, Ishwarlal Parekh Road, and Sainath Road will all be widened as part of the project. Encroachments along these sections are being removed to facilitate easier traffic flow. When the new roads are finished, commuters should experience a reduction in travel time in addition to an improvement in traffic flow. The project represents Mumbai’s larger attempts to address its urgent infrastructure issues and represents a significant turning point in Malad’s urban mobility.
