SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), recently stated that Kumbharwada and other similar localities in Dharavi are a part of the Dharavi Notified Area (DNA) and will be rehabilitated.
According to Srinivas, residents on these plots will not be excluded from the redevelopment program even if the Dharavi Redevelopment Project ends the vacant land tenancy (VLT) scheme.
The redevelopment plan will also provide sufficient protection for the VLT site owners. VLT was founded to prevent encroachment on undeveloped land and recover it when necessary. The city is thought to have some VLT plots, primarily in Parel, Dadar, Mahim, and Sion.
As soon as the DRP/SRA was established as a government agency, VLTs in Dharavi were automatically terminated. The provision reads: “Any land or part of the land with slums on vacant lands created by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or the municipal commissioner for public purposes will automatically be cancelled when submitted for approval to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project and SRA’s DRP department.”
“We are receiving unprecedented support from Dharavi residents during the survey process, and I am confident that former ‘VLT’ owners will also soon participate in this ongoing process,” stated Srinivas.
He invited other private landowners to participate in the reconstruction project, including those in Koliwada and private organisations within the DNA. “There are some privately owned areas in Dharavi, and I would like to invite them to join us and be part of the world’s largest urban renewal project,” he stated.
