On January 26, which is Republic Day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to officially open this portion of the Coastal Road project. But on Monday, January 29, the southbound link will formally open to traffic.
By providing a direct path from the BWSL to Marine Drive without the need for detours, this new link is anticipated to significantly enhance traffic flow between the city’s north and south. The Bandra Worli Sea Link, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg in Worli, and the coastline road were the previous routes taken by commuters from South Mumbai heading north. Traffic will be able to flow smoothly between Marine Drive and the Sea Link after the southbound link is finished, greatly cutting down on travel time.
Although the link is scheduled to open in late January, further work on two interchanges in Worli and one in Haji Ali is still proceeding, according to a senior civic official. It is anticipated that these interchanges will be finished by February 2025. Furthermore, it is projected that the 7.5-kilometer continuous promenade from the Worli end of the Sea Link to Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy will be completed by May.
According to BMC, the project has already been credited with cutting fuel consumption by 34% and travel times by 70%. The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) beside Tata Garden in Breach Candy is also almost finished. This will act as the central hub for the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on the Coastal Road, facilitating more effective traffic control and monitoring.
