Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 Revamp to Ease Passenger Flow, Add 42% More Capacity

The renovation of Terminal 1 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has been announced by Mumbai International Airport Limited. It is anticipated that the renovated terminal will have a 42% increase in capacity, able to accommodate 20 million passengers a year. The project, which is expected to be finished by 2028–2029, will also give sustainability and contemporary infrastructure priority.

Phase 1 of the reconstruction will start in November when the present structure is demolished. The additional capacity will be handled by Terminal 2 and the future Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is scheduled to open in 2025, to control passenger flow during the construction phase. This will guarantee seamless operations throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region throughout the transition.

With plans for future integration of international services, the renovated passenger terminal building of the enhanced T1 will serve local flights. The efficiency of the airport will be increased by modern infrastructure improvements such as district cooling, improved electrical substations, and sophisticated baggage handling equipment. In addition, the terminal will include a multimodal transit hub that will integrate Mumbai’s air, train, and road networks to offer seamless connection with direct metro access and underground bus stops.

“The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimal disruption to daily operations or passenger experience,” stated Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the company that oversees the airport. The goal of this reconstruction is to future-proof our city’s position on the international scene, not just increase capacity.

Providing the outstanding service that our guests have grown accustomed to is still our top focus.

In order to minimise disturbance, the project will be executed in stages. In addition to deploying more service personnel during peak hours, advanced technology such as DigiYatra, self-baggage drop, and e-gates will enable seamless passenger movement. To guarantee continuous operations, airlines and other stakeholders will be notified well in advance.

T1 wants to be the first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport in India, according to CSMIA authorities. With features like interior vegetation, natural light, and open areas, the terminal will have a biophilic design. According to the officials, the architecture, which draws inspiration from the flowing motion of ocean waves, attempts to establish new benchmarks for environmentally aware airport design.
