Mumbai’s Suburban Rail Network Gears Up For A Major Upgrade

The suburban train network in Mumbai is ready for a contemporary makeover, says Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Soon, the city will see newly designed trains with amenities meant to improve traveler comfort and lessen crowding. This news was given at a virtual press conference from New Delhi.

The Central and Western Railways in Mumbai are currently undergoing railway construction valued at Rs 16,400 crore, the minister explained. The goal is to reduce the 180-second gap between local trains to possibly 120 seconds in order to reduce traffic and increase the frequency of services.

Nearly 300 more local rail services will be added to the current 3,000 daily operations thanks to improved infrastructure. With a record expenditure of Rs 23,778 crore for Maharashtra’s railways, the plan also entails the installation of almost 300 kilometres of new tracks.
