Eknath Shinde Announces Major Housing Expansion, 8 Lakh Homes Planned By 2030

The Maharashtra government is stepping up its efforts to increase affordable housing, with a particular emphasis on the MMR Growth Hub Project. In accordance with NITI Aayog’s suggestions, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) plans to construct eight lakh dwellings by 2030 as part of this effort.

This ambitious plan was unveiled today by Eknath Shinde, the deputy chief minister and housing minister, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing everyone with high-quality, reasonably priced housing. Shinde and Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik attended the MHADA Konkan Housing Board’s computerised housing lottery, which was held at Kashinath Ghanekar Auditorium in Thane, at the same time as the announcement.

With 24,711 applications for 2,147 homes and 117 plots, the lottery—which used the fully automated and computerised IHLMS 2.0 system—reflected the public’s high level of confidence in MHADA’s open allocation procedure. For successful applicants, Shinde underlined the significance of timely possession and upholding quality standards. He also emphasised the impending changes to the housing policy, which will include provisions for rental housing, inexpensive housing, and hostels for students, working women, and senior persons, as well as special lodgings for police officers and mill workers.

Shinde also disclosed plans to expedite slum redevelopment and resolve pending MHADA redevelopment programs, as well as plans for Thane, Asia’s largest cluster redevelopment project. One noteworthy initiative in this regard was the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Project in Ghatkopar.

According to Sanjeev Jaiswal, the CEO and vice president of MHADA, the organisation plans to issue about 30,000 homes a year, with regular lotteries to follow. The goal of the proposed Development Control Rule modifications is to expedite the building of affordable housing and include options for rental housing. More than 11,000 people watched the lottery event live on MHADA’s Facebook and YouTube channels. Notifications via email and SMS will be sent out by 6:00 PM, when the list of selected applications will be made public online.
