The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is adding seven additional fire stations to Mumbai’s fire brigade network in strategic places as part of a significant effort to improve emergency response and fire safety. This program seeks to address issues brought on by growing urbanisation, traffic jams, and the need for emergency response.
There are already two fire stations in service, at Kandivali (Thakur Village) and Kanjurmarg (LBS Marg), and work is scheduled to start on further stations at Santacruz, Chembur, Andheri, and two along the Coastal Road. The city’s fire safety system will be strengthened by these new facilities, guaranteeing improved coverage in high-risk areas and quicker response times.
The BMC has set aside ₹160 crore for the current fiscal year and intends to set aside ₹261 crore for 2025–2026 to finance these initiatives. The funds will be used to build new fire stations and renovate existing ones in high-traffic and high-fire risk locations including Tilak Nagar, Mahul Road (Chembur), and Juhu Tara Road (Santacruz). Furthermore, quick emergency responses for events on the busy route would be guaranteed by the two proposed stations along the Coastal Road, one in Worli and the other close to Priyadarshini Udyan.
Presently, there are 51 fire stations in Mumbai, comprising 34 primary and 17 lesser stations. The extension complies with the recommendations of the Standing Fire Advisory Council, which state that there should be one fire station for every 10.36 square kilometres. The BMC hopes to improve citywide resident safety, effectively reduce fire threats, and restore quick-response capabilities with this planned update.
