BMC Aims To Complete 132.75 km Of Road Concretisation In Mumbai Before Monsoon

By the first week of June, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hopes to have 132.75 km of dug-up roadways in Mumbai concreted. This project is a component of the municipal organization’s endeavours to improve road infrastructure and address growing pollution problems.

The BMC has decided to postpone starting any new road-digging operations for concretisation until the start of the monsoon season to reduce the dust pollution brought on by ongoing roadworks. According to Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, the main goal is to finish current projects while maintaining high standards of quality.

Due to particle displacement, Mumbai’s extensive road construction has increased dust pollution. According to BMC data, in the first phase, 372 roads totalling 221.76 km were chosen for concretisation, and in the second phase, 759 roads totalling 218.24 km were chosen. Both phases are presently under construction, with 132.75 km, or about 30% of the entire road length, expected to be finished before the monsoon.

Bangar added that no civil construction work could be done for four months during the monsoon. Therefore, by the time the rains come, the civic authority wants to make sure that no roads are still dug up. New concrete and road repair projects will start after the rain.

Bhushan Gagrani, the municipal commissioner of Mumbai, stated in his budget address that BMC plans to finish 50% of the second-phase projects and 75% of the first-phase concretisation work by March 2026. As to BMC’s budget report, the roadwork’s overall progress is currently at 26%.
