Mumbai commuters can now enjoy a smoother and faster journey as a new section of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) from Haji Ali Juice Centre to Marine Drive has been opened to the public. The newly inaugurated stretch is set to decongest city roads by offering a high-speed southbound connector, significantly improving travel efficiency along the city’s western coastline.
Previously, southbound vehicles had limited entry points to the coastal road, primarily through the Worli interchange, Amarsons interchange, or the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). With this new opening, motorists now have direct access, helping ease congestion on Mumbai’s internal roads and providing an alternative route for faster travel.
A key feature of the MCRP is its multi-level interchanges at crucial locations, including Haji Ali, Peddar Road (Amarsons Garden), and Worli Sea Face. Among these, the Haji Ali interchange is the most complex, featuring eight vehicle arms, while the Amarsons and Worli interchanges have four and five arms, respectively. These interchanges streamline traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks in high-traffic areas.
The final leg of the project, connecting the BWSL to Lotus Jetty-Worli Naka, is expected to be operational by mid-March. While the Worli interchange is in its final stages, minor delays have been reported due to the construction of vehicular parking spaces for the traffic arms. Meanwhile, the Haji Ali interchange arms, which were opened in December 2024, have already provided partial relief to daily commuters.
Stretching 10.58 km from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL, the Mumbai Coastal Road is set to revolutionise the city’s transport infrastructure. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time while relieving congestion on existing road networks.
Last month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated a bow-string arch bridge, enhancing connectivity between the BWSL and the coastal road. Additionally, three major interchanges have been opened to improve access to key areas such as Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction.
With these new developments, Mumbai’s daily commuters can look forward to less traffic, shorter travel times, and a more efficient road network, making city travel much smoother and more organised.
