Mumbai residents have been outspoken in their criticism of the Mumbai Coastal Road project after a video went viral exposing poor patchwork. The video, which was taken from the dashboard of a car, shows shoddy and unequal repairs on the eagerly awaited infrastructure project being created by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The video was shared on platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user named Eternal Drift, who expressed disappointment over the quality of work. “This is beyond disappointing. Mumbai’s ₹14,000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel betrayed—this was supposed to be world-class infrastructure. L&T and BMC must be held accountable. Is this what we paid for?” the post read.
Netizens were incensed after the video, which was purportedly shot on February 18, swiftly went viral. Many criticised officials for what they called poor work, casting doubt on the construction’s quality and the efficient use of public monies.
Several users pointed out Mumbai’s longstanding struggle with poor road conditions despite significant infrastructure investments. Some raised concerns over how the Coastal Road would fare during the monsoon, with weak patchwork potentially deteriorating further. One user sarcastically remarked, “Monsoon toh aane do! Fir dekho aur bhot sara patchwork,” while another speculated that authorities might be waiting for the rains to assess drainage patterns before carrying out resurfacing work.
The BMC has failed to respond formally as public discontent grows. But mounting doubts about the project’s viability have heightened demands for responsibility from the participating contractors as well as the civic organisation.
