Mumbai Coastal Road To Extend To Dahisar, BMC Seeks Public Feedback

A major extension from the previous design, which only went as far as Bangur Nagar in Goregaon, the Mumbai Coastal Road project is now scheduled to reach Dahisar in its northern extension. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has published a notice to the public, asking for comments and objections within 30 days in order to facilitate this modification. After that, a public hearing will be conducted to resolve issues and complete the plan. The BMC has also informed people that land reservations are necessary for this expansion.

A total of 60 plots between Goregaon and Dahisar will be utilised for the project. Of these, approximately 70% are owned by the Maharashtra government, while the remaining parcels are privately held. Some sections of the proposed route fall under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), making them undevelopable. Despite these restrictions, the project aims to enhance connectivity in Mumbai’s northern suburbs by integrating key road networks.

The Versova-Bandra Sea Link junction and the Dahisar interchange will be separated by the approximately 17.6 km Mumbai North Coastal Road. The entire length will be 22 km when the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) link is added. Just the 11.4 km road portion between GMLR and Dahisar is planned, with widths ranging from 36.6 to 53 meters. The combined length of the interchanges and connectors will be 3.5 km, with widths varying from 10 to 40 meters. By passing through important locations like Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, and Dahisar, this stretch will greatly reduce traffic congestion in these areas.

A survey conducted by a specialist established the road’s alignment, and acquiring land is crucial to the project’s success. Only the 5.6-kilometer section from Versova to the GMLR link is now included in the Development Plan (DP-2034). Nonetheless, the extension from GMLR to Dahisar would be incorporated through changes made in accordance with Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional & Town Planning Act, 1966. The Mumbai Coastal Road project is expected to improve the city’s infrastructure and make travel easier for people living in the northern suburbs as a result of these changes.
