Mumbai Coastal Road To Feature New Underpass & 7.5-km Promenade

Ahead of the monsoon season, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is scheduled to unveil two key advancements that would greatly improve the city’s urban infrastructure and coastal connectivity. The high-speed corridor has been being built for a number of years, and two major additions will be a 7.5-kilometer promenade and a recently built 550-meter vehicular subway.

The underpass, located beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, will streamline vehicular movement between Dadar, Prabhadevi, and the coastal road. It will offer direct access to both South Mumbai and the western suburbs, reducing travel time for motorists. This underpass, the only one along the 10.58-kilometre coastal road stretch, will link the Sewri-Worli connector with Marine Drive and Nariman Point, alleviating congestion and improving traffic flow.

The project also includes a scenic promenade stretching from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, designed to create a pedestrian-friendly public space. Featuring jogging tracks, green zones, and seating areas, it will provide panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. Accessibility measures, such as tactile paving, have been incorporated to cater to persons with disabilities. Landscaping work is nearing completion and is expected to be finalised by the end of May.

Running parallel to the southbound carriageway, the promenade forms part of a broader initiative to integrate eco-friendly spaces within the development. With over 70 hectares of reclaimed land, the project also includes green spaces, cycling tracks, and walking paths to promote sustainability. A substantial portion of the reclaimed land will be designated for public use, with corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions from major companies supporting its development.

By improving public areas and reducing traffic, these improvements seek to balance urban growth with accessibility and environmental sustainability as Mumbai continues to grow.
