The construction of four new Metro lines that would connect important neighbourhoods like Navi Mumbai and Thane is expected to start within a year, which is a huge development for the people of Mumbai. When finished, these initiatives will significantly improve the capital of Maharashtra’s commuter connectivity.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) recently unveiled its budget for the financial year 2025–26, amounting to Rs 40,187 crore. A substantial 87 per cent of this, Rs 35,151 crore, has been allocated to infrastructure projects, underscoring MMRDA’s commitment to urban expansion.
Metro Line 5, also referred to as the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor, is one of the major Metro projects scheduled to start this fiscal year. The line is intended to be extended from Durgadi (Kalyan) to Ulhasnagar, covering 24.9 km with 15 stations. The project has been given Rs 1,579.99 crore and is expected to cut travel time by 50–70%. Additionally, Metro Line 5 will provide important linkages to the Central Railway network, the projected Metro Route 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and Metro Route 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali).
Work will also begin on Metro Line 10, which will extend from Gaymukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road), further strengthening suburban connectivity. Additionally, Metro Line 13 is set to improve transport links from Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) to Virar. Meanwhile, the expansive 38-km-long Metro Line 14, running from Kanjurmarg to Badlapur with 35 stations, is expected to commence construction by the end of the financial year.
Mumbai’s continuous attempts to update its public transport system are reflected in these new projects, which will make travel easier and more effective for millions of commuters.
