MHADA’s Budget Plans 19,497 Homes, Faces Low Demand Outside Mumbai

With a budget of Rs 9,202.76 crore for 2025–2026, MHADA plans to build 19,497 homes throughout its regional boards. The Konkan board plans to build 9,902 dwellings with a budget of Rs 1,408.85 crore, while the Mumbai board will build 5,199 homes with a budget of Rs 5,749.49 crore.

However, demand for MHADA housing outside Mumbai remains low, with over 11,000 unsold units state-wide, especially in the Konkan region, raising concerns about continued large-scale construction.

Rs 10,901.07 crore for 2024–2025 and Rs 15,956.92 crore for 2025–2026 are included in the revised budget approvals. The Chandrapur Special Planning Authority would receive Rs 371.20 crore, the Textile Park Empress Mill Scheme will receive Rs 350 crore, and 1,836 homes will be distributed in Pune and 692 in Nagpur.

Funds are also set aside for redevelopment and rehabilitation, including Rs 2,800 crore for the Mumbai Board’s BDD chawl redevelopment. Additionally, Rs 33.85 crore is allocated for selling dilapidated houses in Virar Bolinj with added amenities, while Rs 115 crore is earmarked for the Gotheghar Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

Spending on dilapidated houses has drawn criticism. Funds for elderly homes and hostels as well as Rs 15 crore for a healthcare facility in Thane are included in the budget. However, it was disappointing that mill workers only received Rs 57.50 crore for housing.
