The 30-acre tract of land in Bandra Government Colony, which had housed a 2.5-acre slum community in Gautam Nagar, is where the new Bombay High Court building will be built. By April 10, the slum dwellers who had constituted a significant obstacle to the project should be evicted, paving the door for destruction and further building.
Initially, 138 eligible slum dwellers from Gautam Nagar were offered rehabilitation housing in Malvani, but 100 residents rejected the proposal, demanding relocation within Bandra. Following negotiations, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) agreed to resettle them within Bandra itself.
95 individuals were given homes in the Om Sai SRA project in Kherwadi, which offers 300-square-foot apartments, after a lottery was held to distribute accommodation. The remaining five were given 269-square-foot homes as part of the Balaji Shopkeepers Association Jhopu Yojana program.
An important step in updating Mumbai’s judicial infrastructure has been taken with the completion of the relocation procedure, which has cleared the way for the construction of the new High Court building.
