City To Boost Last-Mile Connectivity With Wider Footpaths & New FOBs

An ambitious plan to enhance pedestrian connectivity around metro stations in the city is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The Hindustan Times story claims that the initiative is a component of MMRDA’s Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) plan, which also entails constructing additional foot overbridges (FOBs) and enlarging pathways to facilitate easier transitions between key commercial areas, suburban train stations, and metro lines.

The organisation is working with Walking Project, a pedestrian advocacy organisation that has been in operation since 2012, to make multimodal travel more accessible, safe, and easy for all commuters to use.

The decision follows discussions with the Walking Project, which brought attention to persistent issues such as uneven footpaths, the absence of wheelchair ramps, and poorly designed road crossings. Vedant Mhatre from the Walking Project acknowledged that while the MMRDA has made efforts to widen footpaths near station entrances, accessibility in the surrounding areas remains a concern.

As part of its broader connectivity push, MMRDA has planned several key projects, including foot overbridges (FOBs) linking Ram Mandir railway station to Goregaon Metro (Line 7), Goregaon Metro to Nirlon Knowledge Park, and Aarey Metro station to Oberoi Mall.

Additionally, new connectivity at Vile Parle (Metro Line 2B) is being designed to link nearby colleges and suburban areas. MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee stressed the importance of a “holistic approach” that integrates metro networks with pod taxis, ropeways, and other last-mile transport solutions.

These infrastructure upgrades aim to increase metro ridership while ensuring safer, quicker commutes. With tenders already floated, construction is expected to commence soon, marking a major stride toward
