As the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is ready to start Line 2B, often referred to as the Yellow Line, trial runs, the Mumbai Metro network is about to reach a major milestone. This 23.643-kilometer line, which connects D N Nagar and Mandale, has 20 stations overall.
According to an MMRDA official, the electrification of the overhead equipment (OHE) was successfully completed last week, marking a crucial step toward opening the line for public service. “As a step towards making the metro corridor open for the public, trial runs would commence from Wednesday,” the official confirmed.
The initial phase of testing will cover a 5.3 km segment between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This stretch includes five key stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. The trial runs on this section will allow MMRDA to assess technical and operational readiness before progressing to the next phase.
Upon completion of preliminary trials, the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways will be invited to evaluate the system. Following RDSO’s assessment, an Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) will be appointed to ensure compliance with safety protocols and international standards.
The final step in the process will involve a comprehensive inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). Once the CMRS deems the corridor fit for public use, Line 2B will move closer to becoming operational, offering enhanced connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.
This development comes at a time when Mumbai’s metro expansion is gaining momentum, with multiple corridors in advanced stages of construction or testing. Line 2B, in particular, is expected to ease the burden on road transport, reduce commute times, and strengthen east–west connectivity within the city.
