Malad’s eleven lakes would be revitalised over the next two years in a major urban waterbody restoration initiative, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday. The first phase of the beautification plan is already in progress, which is the beginning of a long-term project to restore these locations of ecological significance.
As part of the larger ‘Project Mumbai’ plan, the revitalisation project entails cleaning, landscaping, and the construction of municipal amenities like as community spaces, walking trails, and seating spots. Additionally, the project will investigate low-cost treatments and nature-based methods to enhance biodiversity and restore water quality.
The following lakes have been designated for restoration: Takurwadi Talao, Kajupada Talao, Somnath Talao, Sunil Talao (Gorai), Harbadevi Talao, Vanala Talao, Dalitwadi Talao, Jai Talao (Gaavdev Talao), Lotus Talao (Malvani), and Patelwadi Talao (Madi).
With five lakes that are simpler to reach and revitalise, Phase 1 will start right away. In Phase 2, the larger and more deteriorated remaining six will be added based on the knowledge gathered in Phase 1.
A large number of the revitalisation projects will include rainwater gathering systems, silt traps, sewage diversion, and lake desilting. More than 500 businesses have already reacted favourably to the initiative’s sponsor components, officials say.
This is the first time that a multi-lake, extensive project of this kind is being introduced in north Mumbai. When finished, the revitalised lakes will promote biodiversity in metropolitan areas, increase ground water recharge, and offer better public facilities.
In order to establish a model for comparable initiatives in other areas of Mumbai, officials hope to finish the majority of the revitalisation by 2026.
