Every piece of land outside of Dharavi that is allocated for the rehousing of ineligible inhabitants will have its own separate masterplan. Nonetheless, they will all be a part of a single vision that links them to the Dharavi Notified Area’s (DNA) master plan. According to sources, that is the most basic town planning approach being applied in the biggest and most distinctive slum regeneration project in Asia and India.
The development and mobility framework for Dharavi and other land parcels has been shaped in part by this guiding philosophy. The idea to make Dharavi a model urban area that provides its residents and all Mumbaikars with more liveability and dignity has been carefully considered.
According to a source familiar with the Dharavi masterplan, “the same planning approach will be followed for all other land parcels where ineligible Dharavikars will be resettled.”
Every property is being planned as a mixed-use, walkable neighbourhood. In order to guarantee seamless external movement, a number of road links are also being planned, the insider continued.
Proposals like Metro line extensions are being explored with the government about public transport. Additionally, bus routes via the designated properties are being considered. Electric rickshaws, e-bikes, e-scooters, and other micro-mobility solutions are also being planned as forms of shared mobility. According to a source, “the masterplan is being designed to integrate well with the existing rail network since rail transit is the lifeline of Dharavi and Mumbaikars.”
All necessary facilities should be situated 400–500 meters from residences or workplaces within the DNA, according to the master plan. Because of their close proximity, this will not only make the amenities more accessible but also make travel safer.
