In anticipation of the early arrival of the monsoon, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Mumbai’s Guardian Minister, Eknath Shinde, has instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expedite and complete all ongoing drain cleaning operations across Mumbai and its suburbs by June 7, 2025. This directive aims to mitigate the risk of flooding and ensure the city’s preparedness for the impending rainy season.
During an extensive inspection tour on May 23, 2025, Shinde visited several critical locations, including Usha Nagar and Usha Nagar Complex in Bhandup, Nehru Nagar drain in Wadala, and the T Junction in Dharavi. Accompanied by senior civic officials and public representatives, he assessed the progress of desilting activities and emphasized the urgency of completing the remaining work within the stipulated timeframe.
Shinde highlighted that approximately 85% of major drains and 65% of minor drains have already been cleaned. He stressed the importance of removing and transporting the extracted silt to designated dumping grounds within 48 hours to prevent re-siltation and potential flooding. He warned that strict action would be taken against officials who delay or neglect this crucial pre-monsoon task.
Innovative technologies are being employed to enhance the efficiency of the drain cleaning process. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics are being utilized, particularly for desilting operations under railway culverts, in coordination with the Railway authorities. These advancements aim to streamline operations and ensure thorough cleaning of the drainage systems.
To address areas prone to waterlogging, the BMC has identified 422 such spots and installed high-capacity pumping units. Additionally, two storage tanks and ten mini pumping stations have been activated to manage excess water during heavy rains. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to bolster the city’s resilience against monsoon-related challenges.
Shinde also visited the landslide-prone Surya Nagar area in Vikhroli, directing the BMC to install protective nets and relocate residents from high-risk zones to safer locations. He concluded his inspection at Kasarwadi in Dadar, a colony for municipal sanitation workers, where he reviewed local amenities, including the Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Davakhana (clinic) and study centers developed for residents’ welfare.
These concerted efforts underscore the administration’s commitment to safeguarding Mumbai’s infrastructure and ensuring the well-being of its citizens during the monsoon season.
