Mumbai is set to transform Dharavi into a crucial metro interchange, integrating Metro Line 3 (Colaba–BKC–SEEPZ) with the proposed extension of Metro Line 11 (Wadala–CSMT). This strategic junction will enhance connectivity, supporting seamless east-west and north-south travel across the city.
Currently undergoing redevelopment, Dharavi’s new metro connectivity aims to reduce commute times and improve access to economic and social infrastructure for its large population. The revised metro plan includes a second station in Dharavi, linked to Metro Line 11, which will extend westwards from Wadala.
Metro Line 11, estimated to cost over ₹16,000 crore, is designed to connect Mumbai’s central and eastern suburbs with the southern business district. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), managing the underground Line 3, is also responsible for Line 11’s planning and execution.
For decades, Dharavi has suffered from poor transport links despite its economic vibrancy. The metro expansion is expected to alleviate pressure on congested roads such as the Sion-Dharavi Link Road and Eastern Express Highway, benefiting residents and nearby areas including Chunabhatti and Mahim.
The proposed “Dharavi Central Metro Station” will be a multi-level interchange, allowing smooth transfers between Lines 3 and 11. It will feature pedestrian subways, skywalks, and facilities for differently-abled commuters, promoting sustainable transport modes like feeder buses and cycling.
Designed with green building standards, the station will contribute to cleaner air by reducing road traffic emissions. Authorities have pledged to align metro development with the Dharavi Redevelopment Project to avoid displacement and ensure inclusive growth.
If implemented with community engagement and transparency, the Dharavi Metro hub could serve as a model for integrating public transport within informal urban settlements, fostering both connectivity and social inclusion.
