Mumbai Rains Cause Chaos: Nana Chowk BMC Premises Submerged Amid Torrential Downpour

Mumbai witnessed widespread disruption on Monday following relentless rainfall that led to severe waterlogging across key parts of the city, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) premises at Nana Chowk and Grant Road.

Images and videos shared across social media platforms revealed the BMC offices inundated with water, drawing criticism and concern from residents. According to a report by Mid-Day, the flooding not only affected civic infrastructure but also caused considerable inconvenience to daily commuters.

Weather officials reported that Nariman Point recorded the highest rainfall in the city between 6 am and 7 am, with 40 mm. Grant Road saw 36 mm, Colaba received 31 mm, and Byculla experienced 21 mm during the same period. Light showers were reported across both eastern and western suburbs, indicating the wide reach of the downpour.

Not just municipal premises, but low-lying areas such as Hind Mata were also severely impacted by the flooding, with knee-deep water disrupting road traffic.

Train services on the Central Railway were also affected. The Mumbai Division stated that local train operations were running at cautious speeds due to waterlogging between Byculla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Some services were short-terminated at Kurla, Dadar, and Parel and were subsequently rerouted as special services.

In a historic development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the southwest monsoon made its onset over Mumbai on 26 May — more than two weeks earlier than the usual date of 11 June. This marks the earliest arrival of the monsoon in the city in 75 years.

IMD scientist Sushma Nair told PTI, “This is the earliest onset recorded since 1949. Previously, early arrivals occurred on 29 May in 1956, 1962, and 1971.”

The IMD also confirmed monsoon onset in Pune on the same day.
