Vivek Agnihotri Calls Urbanisation A ‘Scam’ Amid Mumbai Monsoon Chaos

Mumbai was brought to a virtual halt as heavy rainfall battered the city, causing flooding in several areas. Social media platforms were flooded—ironically—with photos and videos depicting the current distressing scenes. Residents expressed their frustration and concerns over the worsening situation.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri took to the social media platform X to voice his disappointment. Posting a video showing the flooded streets of Nepean Sea Road, where a bus was stranded amidst the water, he wrote, “Nepean Sea Road, home to India’s top billionaires, ministers, and officials, chokes after one downpour. So do Delhi, Bengaluru, and other cities, year after year. India’s pathetic urbanisation is a scam wrapped in a sham. Poor ordinary citizens… But who cares?”

His message struck a chord with many, prompting a wave of reactions. One user simply wrote, “Really bad,” while another lamented, “There is no town planning; all planning takes place in isolation.” Others stressed the need for significant investment in city infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Mumbai is expected to endure heavy rainfall from 26 to 28 May, with dark skies and persistent showers marking the earliest monsoon arrival in decades. Temperatures are forecast to fluctuate between 23°C and 31°C during this period. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning: “Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 km/h are very likely at isolated locations in Mumbai over the next 3-4 hours. Take precautions while travelling.”

The continuous downpour led to flight delays from early morning, with airlines such as Air India and SpiceJet advising passengers to check for updates before heading to the airport. Waterlogging on railway tracks also caused local train services to run 5 to 10 minutes behind schedule, adding to commuters’ woes.
