Mumbai’s transport network is set for a significant upgrade with the addition of a new metro station in Dharavi, adjacent to the existing one on Metro Line 3. This revised blueprint will connect the elevated Metro Line 11 with the underground Line 3, offering seamless multi-modal transit access to one of the city’s most densely populated and economically vibrant areas.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) explain that the move aligns closely with Dharavi’s broader redevelopment plans. The new station aims to serve not only the current residents but also future commercial and residential developments expected from the ongoing urban renewal efforts. With Metro 11 running parallel to the suburban railway and the upcoming Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor near Matunga, Dharavi’s transport infrastructure is poised for a generational leap.
The project intends to ease last-mile connectivity challenges and reduce road congestion across south-central Mumbai. By linking multiple transit lines, the realignment will improve access to key hubs like Bandra-Kurla Complex, Navi Mumbai, and Mumbai’s international airport—all accessible within a single journey. This enhanced connectivity represents a pivotal moment for Dharavi, a community long underserved by infrastructure.
Spanning 14.3 kilometres, the Metro 11 corridor will feature 11 stations and is being constructed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Estimated to cost ₹11,000 crore, the project supports the state’s goals of modernising Mumbai’s transport system while cutting vehicular dependence.
Urban planners believe Dharavi’s dual-station approach could serve as a blueprint for transport development in other densely populated, redeveloping areas, combining infrastructure growth with social equity. As Mumbai pursues sustainable, carbon-neutral urban growth, reinforcing Dharavi’s metro connectivity signals a step toward a more inclusive and future-ready city.
