Currently in advanced planning stages, Mumbai Metro Line 14 is poised to revolutionise travel between the city and Badlapur. The Rs 18,000 crore project is expected to reduce journey times from nearly two hours to under 60 minutes, significantly enhancing connectivity for the rapidly growing population across Thane and its eastern peripheries.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is leading the initiative. Preliminary work — including route design, feasibility studies, and environmental assessments — is already underway. While construction is scheduled to begin within a year, state authorities are expediting approvals to meet increasing transit demands.
Metro Line 14 will follow a hybrid model. The stretch from Kanjurmarg to Ghansoli will run underground, a strategic choice to navigate congested urban areas and environmentally sensitive zones. The route from Ghansoli to Badlapur will be elevated, easing land acquisition and minimising disruption at street level.
Environmental considerations are at the heart of the planning process. The alignment runs close to ecologically significant areas such as the Parsik Hills and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Project approval will hinge on strict adherence to ecological safeguards, reflecting the state’s pledge to sustainable urban expansion and biodiversity preservation.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by Milan Metro and vetted by IIT Bombay is now awaiting review by the state cabinet. Once approved, bidding and construction phases will commence, with rollout to be phased according to corridor readiness.
Beyond commuter relief, Metro Line 14 forms a key part of Mumbai’s 337-kilometre metro blueprint aimed at easing road congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and reducing reliance on private vehicles. As East Mumbai urbanises at pace, this corridor represents not only a transport upgrade but also a catalyst for economic growth and climate-conscious infrastructure planning.
