The Maharashtra government has finalised a master plan for the redevelopment of Dharavi, with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasising that the project will not only provide new housing but also substantially improve the quality of life for its residents.
Covering a total area of 174 hectares earmarked for redevelopment, the initiative will be jointly managed by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The comprehensive master plan is set to be presented to the Cabinet for approval in the near future.
The Rs 95,790-crore mega project is a partnership between the Adani Group, holding an 80% stake, and the state government with 20%. It aims to transform the sprawling 253-hectare area of Dharavi into a modern and liveable urban environment.
One of the key features of the redevelopment is the construction of a multi-modal transit hub, providing direct connectivity to Metro Line 11. A total of 108.99 hectares within Dharavi will undergo extensive development as part of the plan.
The project also includes the rehabilitation of approximately 72,000 units, comprising 49,832 residential and 12,458 industrial and commercial units, expected to benefit nearly 600,000 people living in the area.
To ensure transparency and efficiency throughout the redevelopment process, advanced technologies such as digital twin technology and tenant management systems will be utilised. Drone and LiDAR surveys have already been conducted, covering 79,455 households to date.
Deputy CM Shinde highlighted the formation of a committee headed by a former Chief Justice to oversee the rehabilitation of 296 religious structures in Dharavi. All decisions regarding the redevelopment will be taken in consultation with the local residents and in full compliance with legal norms, ensuring community participation and fairness throughout the process.
