Mumbai Airport Transitions Fully To Green Energy On World Environment Day 2025

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced a major sustainability milestone—its complete transition to green electricity in the financial year 2024–25. The announcement underscores the airport’s broader environmental commitment, which includes biodiversity initiatives and energy-efficient infrastructure upgrades.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the operator of CSMIA, confirmed that the airport has successfully sourced 100% of its electricity from renewable sources during FY 2024–25, thereby achieving a full reduction in Scope 2 carbon emissions. This move represents a significant step forward in decarbonising one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.

To further enhance energy efficiency, the airport has implemented smart infrastructure solutions such as the replacement of 40 air handling unit (AHU) fans with energy-saving Electronically Commutated (EC) fans. Additionally, IoT-enabled building management systems have been deployed across terminals and parking facilities to optimise energy consumption.

CSMIA has also made strides in urban afforestation, planting approximately 2,000 native trees using the Miyawaki method, a technique that accelerates the growth of dense, native forests and aids in carbon sequestration.

The airport’s waste and water management initiatives include the installation of Reverse Vending Machines at Terminal 2 to promote recycling among passengers, as well as organic waste composters that convert biodegradable waste into compost for landscaping. Reverse osmosis (RO) plants have also been set up to treat wastewater for reuse in cooling systems.

Moreover, the airport conducts real-time monitoring of air pollutants such as PM10 and PM2.5 near Runway 09 and tracks noise pollution through a dedicated network of monitoring stations. These insights help guide operational decisions to minimise the impact on surrounding communities.

A CSMIA spokesperson stated that the airport remains committed to setting global benchmarks in sustainable airport operations.
