CIDCO and the Maharashtra Ports Department are collaborating to launch a water taxi service linking South Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This new route is expected to drastically reduce travel time, cutting the journey from over an hour by road to approximately 40 minutes via water.
The water taxis will operate from a newly constructed jetty near the Radio Club in Colaba. Currently, the road trip to the airport, primarily via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, takes between 60 to 75 minutes. The introduction of electric water taxis is anticipated to save commuters more than 30 minutes, especially during peak traffic periods.
This initiative comes under the direction of the Chief Minister, who has stressed the importance of multi-modal connectivity to the new airport. The proposed system will integrate road, rail, metro, and water transport options to ensure seamless travel for passengers.
CIDCO’s Managing Director recently submitted the water taxi plan to the Ports Minister. The Maharashtra Maritime Board, part of the Ports Department, will be responsible for constructing a new jetty near the airport, providing direct access to water transport.
The Ports Minister has directed his team to draft a formal proposal for the jetty and terminal infrastructure, initiating the approval process with the airport authorities. These efforts mark significant progress toward establishing the water taxi service as a viable and efficient transport option.
Once operational, the water taxi service is expected to offer a faster, cleaner, and more scenic alternative for residents and visitors travelling to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This development represents a forward-thinking approach to easing Mumbai’s transportation challenges while promoting sustainable urban mobility.
