The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised constructions, with a recent enforcement drive targeting illegal building activities in the Airoli division. Despite having received official notices from the Corporation’s encroachment department, the parties involved continued construction work without the necessary approvals.
Under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, and guided by Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Mr Bhagwat Doifode, the encroachment department executed a demolition operation to remove the unlawful structure.
The unauthorised construction comprised an RCC building located behind Vinita Apartments in Sector 20, Airoli village, which had been erected without any sanction from the NMMC. Notices had been served earlier under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, instructing the offenders to dismantle the structure voluntarily. However, their failure to comply prompted the Corporation to undertake a partial demolition.
The operation was carried out using three breakers, two hammers, and one gas cutter, with the support of ten labourers and one supervisor (Mukadam). Officials from the Airoli division’s encroachment department oversaw the entire process. In addition to the demolition, a penalty of Rs 50,000 was imposed on the owner of the illegal construction as a punitive measure.
The NMMC has reiterated its commitment to taking firm action against unauthorised developments. Such initiatives are aimed at preserving the planned nature of urban growth in Navi Mumbai and upholding the rule of law. By levying fines and physically removing illegal structures, the Corporation is sending a strong message of zero tolerance towards violations.
Going forward, sustained vigilance and swift action will be crucial to protect the city’s infrastructure and ensure equitable development for its law-abiding residents.
