June 9, 2025: The reconstruction of the historic Byculla bridge, officially known as the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Railway Bridge, has reached the halfway stage. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that the project remains on track for completion by the end of 2025.
The bridge spans the Central Railway tracks and links NM Joshi Marg in the west with Clare Road and Rani Baug in the east, forming a crucial connection in South Mumbai. Once completed, the redeveloped structure will significantly enhance east-west connectivity and ease traffic flow across major arteries such as the Eastern Express Highway, P D’Mello Road, and Mohammed Ali Road.
According to MMRDA officials, substructure and piling works on the eastern side are nearing completion, while construction has now begun on the western end. Preparations for steel girder installation are also underway.
The original bridge was dismantled after structural concerns were raised by IIT Bombay and the Central Railway. In response, MMRDA adopted a phased reconstruction strategy, working in coordination with railway authorities to facilitate night-time work and block arrangements to minimise disruption.
Though the project initially faced setbacks due to design modifications and logistical hurdles, progress has accelerated in recent months. Officials express confidence in meeting the revised year-end deadline, citing improved inter-agency coordination and a focused construction schedule.
Once operational, the revamped Byculla bridge is expected to reduce traffic congestion and provide a smoother commute between the eastern and western corridors of South Mumbai. Beyond easing vehicular flow, the project will serve as a critical upgrade to the city’s ageing transport infrastructure, enhancing both resilience and efficiency.
MMRDA views the bridge as a key component of Mumbai’s broader mobility transformation efforts.
