MMRDA Proposes Resettlement For 572 Families Affected By Thane-Borivali Tunnel

June 16, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is advancing plans for the proposed twin tunnel connecting Thane (Tikujiniwadi) and Borivali–Magathane. As part of this crucial infrastructure development, approximately 572 informal dwellings in areas such as Rupvate Nagar, Milind Nagar, Pharlewadi, SRA projects, and the footpaths of Magathane will be impacted.

To ensure timely and smooth execution of the project, the MMRDA has announced three distinct resettlement options and has requested affected families to submit their written preferences without delay.

The first option is monetary compensation.Eligible Project Affected Persons (PAPs) may choose to receive financial remuneration based on the size of the structures affected, in accordance with MMRDA’s compensation policy.

The second option is permanent housing. Families may opt for housing units in either the Borivali Integrated Housing Complex or the Rental Housing Scheme at Mira-Bhayander. These units, developed by M/s Gujarat and M/s Sonam Enterprises, will be allocated based on the family’s selection.

The third option is rehabilitation through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme. Under this plan, PAPs will receive permanent housing at the original site post-redevelopment, carried out by Bhardwaj Developers. In the interim, they will be provided with either rental or alternative accommodation.

The MMRDA has formally notified all affected households and urged them to indicate their preferred option in writing. Once applications are received, legal and administrative procedures will follow to facilitate a seamless transition.

This initiative highlights MMRDA’s attempt to balance critical urban development with humane and inclusive rehabilitation for displaced residents.
