June 16, 2025: In a major step towards expanding Mumbai’s metro infrastructure, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has secured approximately 430 acres of land in Mogarpada, Thane district. This acquisition will facilitate the construction of the city’s largest metro depot, which will support operations and maintenance for four key metro corridors: Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11. Together, these lines will span nearly 56 kilometres, connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Mira Road.
According to The Economic Times, this acquisition marks a critical milestone in strengthening metro connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The depot will serve as a central hub, enhancing the efficiency of the expanding network and supporting the long-term goals of integrated and sustainable urban transit.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the acquisition as a “landmark development” for the city’s public transport system. “MMRDA’s timely acquisition of the Mogarpada land parcel accelerates our mission to deliver world-class, multimodal infrastructure for a New Maharashtra,” he said.
To ensure a fair and inclusive process, MMRDA has implemented a rehabilitation framework modelled on the land acquisition guidelines of the City & Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Under this plan, leaseholder farmers will receive 22.5% of their original land as developed plots, while encroachers will be allotted 12.5%. The master layout also includes 18-metre-wide access roads and 12-metre-wide internal roads.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde stated, “With transparent land acquisition, farmer-friendly rehabilitation, and forward-looking engineering, we are laying the foundation for transformative infrastructure.”
MMRDA aims to hand over the developed plots within 36 months, underlining its commitment to delivering transit solutions that are inclusive, future-ready, and environmentally sustainable.
