June 16, 2025: The Indian Railways’ decision to extend the Mumbai-Jalna Vande Bharat Express to Nanded has received an overwhelmingly positive response, particularly from Mumbai’s Sikh community. This extension addresses a long-standing request to improve accessibility to Hazur Sahib in Nanded — one of the five Takhts of Sikhism and an important pilgrimage destination.
The newly extended service, designated as train numbers 20705 and 20706, will operate six days a week, excluding Wednesdays. As per the revised schedule, train 20705 will depart from Nanded at 5:00 AM and arrive at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 2:25 PM. Meanwhile, train 20706 will leave CSMT at 1:10 PM and reach Nanded by 10:50 PM. The timings have been structured to facilitate comfortable and convenient travel for devotees, business travellers, and tourists alike.
This initiative is being widely seen as a significant stride towards enhancing religious tourism and strengthening cultural linkages. Moreover, it forms part of the government’s broader vision to bolster infrastructure and connectivity in tier-two and tier-three cities. The Vande Bharat Express is known for its state-of-the-art amenities, including air-conditioned coaches, ergonomic seating, and onboard catering, all of which contribute to an upgraded passenger experience.
While the Sikh community has especially welcomed this development, it has also prompted broader conversations regarding the need for equitable transportation upgrades across the region. Observers stress the importance of ensuring that infrastructure projects serve diverse communities and regional needs in a balanced manner.
Overall, the extension of the Vande Bharat Express to Nanded symbolises a meaningful step in Indian Railways’ modernisation journey — one that prioritises connectivity, inclusivity, and cultural preservation.
