June 17, 2025: An electric midi bus operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking became partially trapped in a pit near a Metro construction site in South Mumbai on Monday morning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and all passengers on board were safely evacuated, according to officials.
The incident took place on Dr Babasaheb Jaykar Marg at Thakurdwar, close to the Girgaon Metro Station site, where construction work for Mumbai Metro Line 3 is currently underway. The rear portion of the bus became stuck after the road beneath it partially caved in, causing the vehicle to tilt into the depression.
Local residents alleged that the pit — estimated to be around five feet deep — was caused by excavation related to the ongoing Metro work. The sudden collapse disrupted traffic briefly and drew concerns over safety precautions near infrastructure development sites.
A spokesperson for the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) stated that the agency is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The MMRC is yet to confirm whether the pit was directly linked to the Metro construction activity.
BEST spokesperson Sudas Sawant said he was attempting to contact the concerned officials for a detailed report. In the meantime, precautionary measures were put in place to manage the situation and ensure that no further damage or injuries occurred.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and coordination between civic bodies and infrastructure agencies, particularly in densely populated areas like Girgaon. With monsoon rains intensifying, such occurrences raise pressing questions about the integrity of roads and the need for thorough pre-monsoon inspections.
Authorities are expected to issue a detailed assessment following a joint inspection by the civic and metro teams.
