BMC Plans New GMLR Flyover Extensions For Sion-Panvel Highway Access

June 17, 2025: Years after the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) flyover became operational, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is finally addressing a long-standing gap in the city’s road network. The civic body has initiated work to construct two new flyover arms that will directly link the GMLR to the Sion-Panvel Highway. Estimated to cost Rs 1,051 crore, the project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce dependence on the busy T-junction at Maharashtra Nagar.

At present, the GMLR flyover routes vehicles from Ghatkopar towards Vashi via the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), but it lacks direct access to the Sion-Panvel Highway. As a result, commuters are compelled to navigate the Maharashtra Nagar junction, where bottlenecks and long delays are common, especially during peak hours. The new arms, which will measure approximately 1.47 km and 1.93 km respectively, are designed to bypass the signal entirely, offering uninterrupted connectivity to the highway.

Construction is expected to commence in the coming months, following a tender process launched last year. The new flyover sections will rise to 8.5 metres and span around 620 metres. Permissions from key authorities, including the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority and the Mangroves Department, were secured only recently due to the flyover’s proximity to ecologically sensitive zones.

Further complicating the project is its overlap with a proposed Mumbai-Navi Mumbai metro corridor and its proximity to both city airports, requiring additional land acquisition. Officials from CIDCO and the BMC’s bridges department have confirmed that acquisition efforts are ongoing, and further approvals have been sought to speed up execution.

Meanwhile, another planned arm linking GMLR directly to Maharashtra Nagar remains stalled, pending a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Central Railway.
