June 20, 2025: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has identified 501 buildings as structurally unsafe following its annual safety audit for 2025–26. Of these, 51 buildings have been classified under the C-1 category — indicating they are extremely hazardous and unfit for habitation — and must be vacated immediately.
The assessment, conducted on a department-wise basis, marked these structures as unsafe under Section 264 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act. This year’s count reflects a slight improvement, with the number of dangerous buildings declining from 527 last year, which officials attribute to ongoing redevelopment projects.
In comparison, last year’s figures recorded 62 buildings in the C-1 category, with others falling under C-2A (113), C-2B (303), and C-3 (49) classifications. The updated list, now available on the official NMMC website, highlights buildings in bold if they fall within the high-risk C-1 category. The list also notes whether the premises are currently in residential use.
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde confirmed that formal notices have been issued to property owners and residents, warning them against continued occupation. “These notices are in accordance with the Government of Maharashtra’s 2015 circular on demolition of dangerous buildings,” he said.
Shinde further cautioned that electricity and water supplies will be disconnected from all C-1 structures. “Those who choose to remain despite official warnings will bear full responsibility for any loss of life or property. The Corporation cannot be held liable,” he stated.
With the monsoon season already underway, the civic body has issued a fresh public advisory, urging residents to vacate dangerous buildings immediately. “Staying in such structures during heavy rains poses a serious risk,” warned Shinde.
