June 20, 2025: Mumbai’s mega road concretisation initiative, launched in July 2022 under then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has completed just 49.07% of its targeted work as of 31 May 2024. The project, aimed at creating a pothole-free city, involves converting 698.44 km of road across 2,121 works under two phases.
By the May 2024 milestone, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had completed 1,385 roads covering 342.74 km. Of these, 771 roads (186 km) were finished end-to-end, while 614 roads (156.74 km) were completed partially or from junction-to-junction. All completed roads have been opened to traffic.
Despite delays, officials maintain that the overall project remains on track for final completion by May 2027. Phase 1, which began in February 2023, is expected to wrap up by December 2025, while Phase 2, commencing in September 2024, is slated for completion by May 2027.
In Phase 1, out of 700 roads spanning 320.08 km, 582 roads (203.36 km) have been completed — 343 (101.67 km) fully and 239 (101.68 km) partially — marking 63.53% progress. Phase 2, which includes 1,421 roads over 378.36 km, has seen 803 roads (139.38 km) completed so far, with 428 (84.33 km) fully and 375 (55.06 km) partially completed — reflecting 36.84% progress.
To maintain momentum, civic authorities are conducting surprise inspections and working with IIT experts. Excavation on completed stretches is strictly banned, and permits are no longer issued for such work. Barricades and debris have been cleared from finished sites, drains cleaned, and reconstruction of speed breakers will begin post-approval.
The project continues to face challenges but remains central to the city’s long-term infrastructure overhaul.
