June 21, 2025: In a significant step towards upgrading its canine infrastructure, the Mumbai Police is set to construct a Rs 10 crore, state-of-the-art kennel complex at the Marol Police Training Centre in Andheri East. The modern facility will cater to the needs of both active and retired service dogs, offering advanced training grounds, veterinary care, and dedicated housing.
According to senior police sources, the Mumbai Police canine unit currently comprises 33 dogs across various breeds, including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labradors, and Dobermans. These dogs play vital roles in departments such as Anti-Narcotics, Bomb Detection and Disposal, and VIP Security. Each canine is assigned two constables responsible for its daily care, handling, and operational readiness.
The demand for a purpose-built kennel has been long-standing within the force. It has now received formal approval from the state Home Department. The proposed complex will accommodate up to 50 dogs and include essential infrastructure such as an isolation ward to treat and quarantine unwell or injured animals.
For the first time, the facility will also offer on-site accommodation for retired service dogs. Until now, these loyal animals were typically rehomed through NGOs or adopted by volunteers and animal welfare organisations. With the new provision, Mumbai Police aims to ensure that its canine officers receive continued care and comfort post-retirement.
Officials emphasised that the project is part of a broader initiative to modernise the city’s policing infrastructure while recognising the invaluable contribution of working animals. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
This move not only boosts operational efficiency but also reflects a more compassionate and holistic approach to animal welfare within the law enforcement system. It underlines the growing recognition of service dogs as integral members of the force, both during and after duty.
