June 25, 2025: As the Adani Group sets out to preserve Dharavi’s distinctive character while reimagining it as a world-class district, Chairman Gautam Adani has described the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) as the group’s most transformative undertaking to date.
Speaking at the 33rd Annual General Meeting of Adani Enterprises Ltd, Adani said the project presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to uplift the lives and living conditions of over one million Dharavi residents. “Asia’s largest slum is now being reimagined as India’s most ambitious urban rehabilitation initiative,” he stated.
The vision for Dharavi includes spacious housing, modern infrastructure, dual-toilet facilities, open green areas, schools, hospitals, parks, and transit hubs. The DRP also aims to foster economic development and improve health, education and employment prospects through various social upliftment initiatives under the ‘Dharavi Social Mission’.
Central to the plan are three core principles: driving economic transformation through redevelopment, building resilient infrastructure and ecology, and promoting equitable development. A significant part of the strategy includes creating an interconnected network of public and green spaces—from large city parks to local playgrounds—ensuring every resident has access to open, walkable areas that enhance liveability and ecological resilience.
A major public open space is envisioned at the heart of Dharavi, intended not only for local recreation but as a venue for broader community gatherings, festivals and celebrations for all Mumbaikars.
Dharavi will also be developed as a transit-oriented hub, with integrated multi-modal connectivity. A new Metro corridor will pass through its core, supported by a network of feeder buses, infrastructure for non-motorised transport, and a fine-grain street grid to promote walkability. A state-of-the-art Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) will offer seamless access to inter-city, intra-city, suburban, Metro, High-Speed Rail, airport express, buses, and local transit—making it a unique mobility hub in India.
